All Your Base

I am a big fan of how things look, but with it being a game there is always that element of playability.
I could probably get away with not using movement trays but my wife insists on them.
Now the trays themselves I don’t mind too much as I make mine to be fairly unobtrusive:

But when the models start being removed then it looks ugly, even when the inside of the tray is painted:

So rather than horrible MDF trays showing, I have made some blanks to replace the models with:

Much nicer on the eye and helps maintain the suspension of disbelief.:

  1. Looks good. I concur with how sabots look once you start removing figures.

    1. Yeah it can make immersion suddenly that much harder for me.
I plan on doing some bigger bases too, big squares and strips, probably with some casualties on them too.

  2. That's a great idea and I really like how the bases turned out.

  3. Good idea, have you tried painting and flocking the outside of the tray in the same style? It’s what I do.

    1. I did think about that, but my tray lips are quite thin and I am convinced getting static grass to stand up would be tricky, plus there is no room for tufts or stuff.
The edges I don't want to do as I quite like the black edges the same as you get on the slotta bases.

There was an element of me that wanted to duplicate what I did on my 10mm stuff which was to make the front edge of the tray the same colours as the unit.

      Examples here:
