The Last of the Undead

Both my garrison and undead force are deliberately small in size to allow skirmish games and not to take up too much painting time.

I have now finally finished the final two models and my Undead force is done!!

First I painted Krell.
I actually found him quite dull and uninspiring compared to Jacsen and Ranlac, which surprised me as lore wise he greater and more powerful of the trio.

Once a champion of the dark gods of Chaos, left for dead and forgotten by those he once worshipped, he lied entombed, waiting in undeath for a chance to take his revenge.

It was Heinrich Kemmler who found and freed Krell.

Bound now to The Lichemasters indomitable will he serves a new master.

Then I painted the main man himself.

Heinrich Kemmler

After his costly victory at Frugelhofen the Lichemaster and what few remained of his force moved slowly through the foothills and into Sylvania proper.

Seeking a new source of power he discovered the legend of the Karnsteins and of one particular dread member of that cursed household; Mircalla Karnstein.

He moves now with renewed dread purpose and seeks to return The Countess of Blood, Mircalla Karnstein from her unholy slumber to aid him in his quest for revenge.

(
The astute may notice I removed some odd bits of casting from the staff that joined it to the body, I am not sure what they are meant to be and not wholly convinced they are meant to be there and not some sort of vent or something, maybe to strengthen it?)

So this concludes all the undead and the garrison has been complete a while.

The focus now is to build the village and populate it.

So more scratch builds and more characterful villager types!!

Have a very Merry Christmas!!

  1. Krell has always been my favourite Warhammer character and you've done a great paint job on him. You can never have too much undead.

    1. Thanks. What about Krell do you like so much?

    2. He was my first general. I'm also very much based in 4th edition those army books are the core of my Warhammering.

    3. Ah right, I had no idea Krell was in 4th. I play 3rd and he is not really in that as such.
      Just goes to show.

  2. Nice paint job, Heinrich has been on my Oldhammer most wanted list since the beginning. Given the prices I will probably have to use the one from Antediluvian minis to head my undead.

    1. Thank you. He was not a cheap purchase for sure.
The Antediluvian ones are however quite a lot bigger than any oldhammer models so factor that, it will not fit on a 20mm base for starters and is much taller.

  3. I am really glad with how you faced your undead. A bunch of minis, with a clear objectives and a goal you can reach in a short term, so you do not get bored with the project and, once finished you can decide if you enlarge it or jump to something completly different.

    1. Exactly so, we all get that new army itch sometimes and a new small force should be easy enough to do should I give into it!

  4. I'm in love with all your work on these, they look really ace. Cool job!

  5. I love the rusty armour effect on Krell. I've been trying to work out how you do it. Is it a brown basecoat highlighted in silver or applied as a wash afterwards?

    1. Thanks.

I do a base coat of mid/low shiny metal.
Then a dark brown ink wash all over.
Then some highlights with the base metal again.
Then some more highlights with a lighter metal.

This gives a sort of worn slightly grubby but not rusty look.

The rust is just Coat d'arms Horse Tone Bay.
I do some slight staining with a thinned application of it, then in some areas that I think would have proper rust build up, I paint it on neat.

Possibly some better shots of it on the other undead blog posts?
